Board Director

A board director is a member of a governing body which exercises a common or collective authority. This is different from the authority pertaining to the leader of a business firm or the CEO of a nonprofit organization. If you understand the nature of that authority, you can contribute to an effective board.

One leading book on procedure puts it this way:

“All members of a governing board share in a joint and collective authority which exists and can be exercised only when the group is in session.”
The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure, 4th edition.

Some readers may feel that this point is obvious, but many boards and many directors fail to understand it. Because the authority of a board exists only during its meetings, it is critical to maximize the effectiveness of your meetings and get the most from them.

Jurassic Parliament offers tips, techniques and guiding principles to make better meetings possible for any board.

These publications offer specific and practical guidance for better meetings.
